On Friday, May 19, 2017, we welcomed two new franchise owners and one general manager to the ASP family. They completed 100 hours of training during ASP’s Pool School program. Congratulations!

Mario Arevalo, Owner & Operator of ASP in Weston, Florida

Mario was accompanied by Juan Fernandez, the General Manager of the ASP Weston franchise. They will provide professional pool service in Weston, Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Davie, Sunrise, Andytown, Cooper City, and Plantation, FL.

Mario was born in Nicaragua and moved to the United States when he was seven years old. He grew up in Miami, Florida, and enlisted in the United States Army upon graduating high school. After seven years in the military, Mario decided to pursue a career as a certified firefighter and paramedic. Since 2008 has worked as a firefighter for the Miami Fire-Rescue Department. Mario has a passion for serving his community which has led him to follow his dream of business ownership. An ASP franchise gives Mario the freedom to own a business while continuing to serve as a firefighter.

Caleb Daulton, Owner & Operator of ASP in St. Petersburg, Florida

The ASP St. Petersburg franchise will provide professional pool service in St. Petersburg, FL, and the surrounding areas.

Caleb was born and raised in the small town of Shelbyville, Indiana. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and has served for the past 14 years. Caleb also has a background in aircraft maintenance and nursing. His desire to start a business has been influenced by other business owners, like his father. In September, he started considering franchise opportunities and found a swimming pool franchise to be the perfect match. For Caleb, ASP stood out because of its technology and forward thinking in the swimming pool industry.

Continuing Success: ASP in Dallas Honored with Top Sales Award

Herschel Forester, Owner and Operator of America’s Swimming Pool Company (ASP) in Dallas, Texas, received Top Sales Award for 2016.

The Dallas franchise location has been ranked number one in sales for four consecutive years. It was announced this year that Forester and his team of 10 employees exceeded the $2 million mark for 2016.

“We have a team of dedicated, hardworking folks that make our business go,” said Forester.  “I have enjoyed having my wife, Cindy, work with us for the past couple of years. I am also proud of our pool renovation department that is very productive under Darren Kesler’s leadership.”

Reaching these goals has been a great accomplishment for the Dallas team.

Forester launched the Dallas location in 2010 by converting his previously self-employed pool business to an ASP franchise. Converting his business has been a significant factor in his growth, along with the counsel from both the Founder and Vice President of the franchise organization.

ASP’s Franchise Location in Pensacola Recognized with Award for Best New Start

Shane Lawson, Owner/Operator of America’s Swimming Pool Company in Pensacola, Florida, was recognized with an award for Best New Start at ASP’s annual event. The Pensacola franchise location is one of 15 new ASP locations across the Nation that opened their businesses in 2016.

“I am honored to receive this award and look forward to many years of growth,” said Lawson. “I attribute this first-year success to my grandfather, who was

also a small business owner. I often think about the strong work ethic he instilled in me, and that’s what drives me to work harder and go the extra mile for my customers and my business.”

Lawson started as an ASP franchise owner exactly one-year ago, but he never expected to stumble upon an opportunity to become an owner in the pool industry. After many years of working in plumbing and engineering, Lawson knew ASP was the logical next step in his career. It didn’t take long to discover this was a perfect fit for him and his family.

Franchisee Profile: Jon Lutz

Meet Jon Lutz, Owner/Operator of America’s Swimming Pool Company located in Palm Harbor, FL. Jon and his fiancé, Carrie Limoges, have been operating the ASP location in Palm Harbor since March 2016.

Jon has worked and has held ownership in a few different service industry businesses for the past 18 years, so he knew he wanted to start a business in the service industry. While living in Charleston, SC, Jon found out about ASP and about the opportunities to become a franchise owner. After discovering the support and training that ASP Franchising offered, it was a “no-brainer” decision for Jon.

“The most beneficial aspect about joining an ASP franchise is having the support and wealth of knowledge from corporate and other franchise owners. There is always someone who will have an answer,” said Jon. “I also enjoy the connections I have been able to make due to being a part of a franchise. These connections would have taken a lot longer on my own.”

Jon and Carrie are off to a great start as new franchise owners. Jon’s advice to franchising candidates would be to make sure they are ready to be responsible for their own successes or failures. An ASP franchise provides a lot of support when starting the new business, but it is always important to remember that effort must be put in to become successful.

Most ASP franchise owners are not too familiar with the pool business until they come to Pool School, a two-week training course each new franchisee goes through at corporate headquarters. Jon and Carrie entered Pool School in November 2015 to familiarize themselves with the pool industry and the franchise. Jon’s focus for 2016 has been to spend his time learning the pool business and getting comfortable with it. Jon plans for the bigger goals he wants to accomplish for his business and breaks the larger goals into smaller, short-term goals. He then pushes to reach those smaller goals, so he can achieve his bigger, overall goal.

“I like the fact that I am building something while still allowing myself the flexibility to live life the way I enjoy,” said Jon. “If you don’t mind working and getting your hands dirty, then this is by far the best business.”

Meet William Schlemmer, Veteran Owner/Operator of America’s Swimming Pool Company of Coastal Virginia located in Virginia Beach, VA. He became an ASP franchise owner in September 2014 and has had a successful start.

After retiring from the military, Schlemmer’s desire was to pursue a second career in business. He earned his MBA while on active duty and enjoyed the aspect of small business ownership. He considered a franchise because of the turn-key aspect. He liked the idea of having a base and team to fall back upon when needed.

“I liked the aspect of having a base of professionals with a wide breadth of the exact experience required,” said Schlemmer. “There is always support when needed.”

A lot of time is put into researching the right franchise. Once the right franchise is found, training is conducted to make the first year as easy as possible, but there can always be roadblocks ahead. There are certain aspects of planning that can help anyone through the initial start. ASP franchisees like Schlemmer have discovered the importance in investing in employees and focusing on exceeding expectations.

“Plan your launch like a military operation, in that you consider contingencies, desired end-states, and most likely courses of action. War-game your launch and identify several key factors that must be achieved for success, and several key factors that could be catastrophic,” stated Schlemmer.

ASP provided Schlemmer with the support to successfully start his own business. Housed at headquarters, ASP offers a 20,000-square-foot training campus with 12 display pools, two functioning pools, and a classroom. This is where pool school is held. A two-week training program that each franchisee goes through before launching their business.

Schlemmer has learned a lot about the pool business through Pool School, but he also dedicates a lot of his knowledge from his background as a Naval Flight Officer. Schlemmer’s dedication to his business and his employees is evident.

“My military background and training prepared me for business ownership in 3 key areas; 1. Multi-tasking. A pool service company can be very busy, with multiple projects working simultaneously. The ability to prioritize, focus, and execute are crucial to achieving or exceeding our customer’s expectations 100% of the time. 2. Accountability is imperative in being a successful military member as well as a business owner. Gain trust by doing what you say you are going to do, and pledge to the customer that you, as the owner, will be held accountable if the team misses the mark. 3. Planning is such a key ingredient of any successful operation. Whether launching a start-up or preparing to conduct and extensive renovation, planning is where you start. The more planning you conduct, the higher the percentage of mission success and mitigation of unplanned consequences,” said Schlemmer.

ASP Continues Growth in California

Fall 2015 was a significant time for Jack and Susie Carter, who were owners of a pool maintenance business named, All Pure Pool and Spa and co-owners of All Pure Pool Service of Central CA. They were already living in California and had been business owners for the past 30 years. They were looking for ways to expand and explore new avenues that can be touched and developed in the California area. After reading an article in Pool and Spa News, about ASP-America’s Swimming Pool Co. owners going pink for breast cancer awareness month, the Carters began researching more about ASP and the franchising system they had in place.

“We talked with Jef, VP of Franchise Sales and Development, and loved the idea of being apart of a co-op,” said Jack Carter.

In January 2016, the Carters made the decision to convert their businesses to ASP- America’s Swimming Pool Company. ASP Chatsworth has so much growth potential and the Carters are ready to see what possibilities there are. Jack Carter grew up in Oregon and Susie Carter is a native to Modesto, CA. Upon completing high school, Jack Carter spent four years in the United States Navy. In 1985, Navy Veteran, Jack Carter began his career in the pool business with a pool chemical franchise and then became owner of All Pure Pool and Spa. Susie Carter came into the pool business by doing office work for the company. Together they now own ASP- America’s Swimming Pool Company in Chatsworth, CA and a second location Fresno, CA.

ASP Awards Winner of Veteran Program with a Free Pool Service Franchise New franchise to open in Reno, Nevada in April

MACON, Georgia– ASP – America’s Swimming Pool Company recently announced the winner of their veterans program. The program, launched on Veterans Day 2015, was designed to honor the service given to our country with the awarding of a free pool maintenance franchise. The winner, Miguel Macias, will open his franchise in Reno, Nevada, this coming April.

“As a thank you for the service rendered to our country, ASP is committed to honoring our nation’s veterans by awarding one free pool service franchise each year to a qualified veteran,” said Stewart Vernon, Founder & Chief Executive Officer or ASP. “Though the program just launched in 2015, we are excited to have our first winner, and welcome Macias to the franchising family. We are thankful for the service he has given to our country and know that the skills he learned in the course of that service will prove beneficial in his new endeavor as an ASP owner.”

Macias served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, 13 of which were spent serving as an HR officer. After being stationed all over the world, Macias retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 2015. When deciding what to do after retirement, he discussed the ASP opportunity with a friend and former ASP employee and was impressed by the comprehensive program they provide. From his military experience, Macias learned leadership, responsibility, and resourcefulness; skills that will directly translate to his work as an ASP pool service franchise owner.

According to Macias, his most remembered military moment was when America was attacked on September 11, 2001. At the time, he was working on a Navy destroyer pier-side in Norfolk, VA. After watching the news coverage of the event on TV, the crew was told to get the ship ready to deploy with no further instructions about where they were going or for how long. The crew busily prepared the ship and ended up patrolling in the New York/Boston area.

Before military service, Macias earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in management information systems and Italian studies. He also attended the school again while in the service and earned his MBA in Human Resources. Navy service is second nature to the Macias family as his wife is a retired Navy nurse and their oldest daughter is currently serving in the Navy.

Many veterans have a hard time during the transition process from serving in the military to becoming a civilian as military skills are hard to translate directly into business skills. However, the military does prepare you to have the confidence to start something new and make business decisions. Macias says he is “thrilled, excited, and grateful to the team for selecting me. I am very humbled and very blessed to have this gift, and excited to get going!”

Though the Macias family has only been in Reno a matter of months, they are excited about their new home and love the active lifestyle that residents lead. Macias hopes that as swimming season draws near that his ASP pool maintenance franchise will be the go to company for the residents of Reno.
